A few additional observations about Experts

Hopefully, you enjoyed and found this story amusing enough to have elicited a hearty chuckle or loud laughter while appreciating the obvious parallel with all who are labeled ‘Experts’ – whether by the virtue of education, degrees, titles, reputation, past achievements, exaggerated boasting, raw egotism or simply because, for these Meyvens, “it’s a living”…

This story truly encapsulates the essence of ‘Just How reliable are Really ALL the 'Absolutes'…the ‘Truths written in granite’... Inflexible, Definitive, Rigid, 'Professional' opinions, diagnoses, prognostications, advice, dictates, scare tactics, formulae, predictions, warnings, intimidations with threats of various dooms if you fail to follow their instructions to the letter... Dos and Don’ts by the ‘Experts’...in particular those who, more often than not, have not learned to transcend their egos..thus, practice haughtily egocentric pontificating and regurgitating opinionated ‘Certainties’…in ’MY way or the highway’ style’…

The Great late Albert Einstein…considered one of the all-time pure geniuses ever produced by mankind humbly admitted that, from the awesome Dimensions and capabilities of the boundless Inner Universe of the Human Brain…he doubted that he utilized as much as TEN PERCENT!...He further went on to say that ‘ As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain…and, as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.’…

More and more, this statement is reflected in the mirrored retractions…admissions of mistakes, miscalculations, of old ‘scientific facts and findings’ having been proven erroneous and of new discoveries rendering them archaic and obsolete...At every turn, the wisdom of Pere Andre comes back to haunt and remind us about the clay feet of ‘the Experts’...

As you progress in this series of informative sessions…you will become more aware of the subtle…intrinsic differences between ‘expertise’ and ‘experience’… the first being related to mainly theoretical ‘book learning’…lab. tests performed on rodents and the like on one hand…On the other are ‘track records’ resulting from actual experiences with tests, experiments, applications and numerous other verifiable results obtained consequentially with masses of actual human beings

The Banker and the Aged Belgian Priest

Let me share with you the amazing story of what happened to a very famous financial success a while back..

Ambrose Stillwell,III was a renowned multi-billionaire and the head of San Francisco's largest Bank..lived in his hilltop eagle's nest mansion with a six car garage that housed five luxury automobiles and his stretch limo…

He had been happily married to his glamorous, elegant wife for nearly twenty years. They had three healthy children doing well in their private schools... had servants... chauffeurs...gardeners...a private Chef...a successful investment portfolio...members at the most elite country club... traveled the world on their luxury yacht...lacking nothing material...

One morning, on his way to the Bank, traffic over the Bay Bridge had slowed down...Ambrose tells his chauffeur to stop, as he wished to walk, and sent the limo. back to the Estate...

After a while, he stopped and called his wife, advising her that he was not going to his office...and may not even come home that night... he felt he had to clear his head of pressures...rented a room in a run-of-the-mill Hotel and began his mental quest for 'Truth and The Purpose of Life', which had been plaguing him for some time...

A couple of unsatisfying meetings with San Francisco-based Religious leaders motivated him to fly to L.A., where he aspired to hook up with a Swami at the Vedanta Temple...and a famed, etherial Rabbi...

One night, as he was wandering about, he got mugged and robbed of all his cash, wallet with credit cards, jewelry...couldn't afford to pay for his Hotel room, so he ended up being a street person and Mission beggar...

Life was tough in the streets, so he attempted to get new credit cards, or withdraw a few thousand dollars... This is when he learned that his wife had frozen all his accounts and blocked him from obtainaing any kind of credit or loan...

He began his journey to Salt Lake City, hoping to find answers in the LDS Temple...got nothing much there...went on to New York...still nothing...

Three years later, after Many terrible adventures, disappointments, much suffering and pain, and other agonizing set-backs... he found himself climbing the snow-covered Himalayas as he was attempting to reach Tibet, where he had been told there was a 190-year-old Belgian former Priest, Pere Andre, now The Grand Lama ...who was said to have found 'The Secret of Life'.

Not being in the best of physical conditions...scantily clothed, his foot slipped and he fell down a ravine. Lying there with a broken ankle, weak, he was prepared to freeze to death...

A group of Tibetan Buddhist Priests, on their way back to the Temple from an excursion, noticed Ambrose...gently picked him up and carried him to the top of the mountain...

Looking down on the other side, there was no snow...no bitter cold...just blue skies, greenery, multi-colored flower beds, peaceful, happy people moving about... everyone appearing young, happy and healthy...He wondered if this was the legendary "Shangri-La" where eternal youth flourished?..They took him there...bathed him and tended to his wounds...fed him...gave him comfortable clothes...had him rest in a warm, comfortbale bed...

Ambrose was getting edgy, since he was so close to Pere Andre ...and couldn't wait to have an audience with him, at long last...A Buddhist Priest advised him that Pere Andre was aware of his presence and would soon call for him...

Two days later that felt like two weeks, it finally happened !... and he was taken to an incense-perfumed room where a frail figure of a man sat on what looked like a throne...in semi-darkness...He spoke first in a weak but kind voice, '..and what do you wish to ask me, my son?'...

Ambrose eagerly shared with him that he had been assured by many 'Holy' people in Europe and America to be 'THE' Absolute Authority in Spiritual matters...wise, learned, Saintly...a Top EXPERT in ALL Godly matters...who had ALL the ANSWERS... including the one sought by Ambrose: 'WHAT is TRUTH and THE MEANING OF LIFE' ?

Without a moment's hesitation, Pere Andre said: ‘In your country, a comedian called Woody Allen said something very deep once: ‘I’m astounded by people who want to ‘know’ the Universe, when it’s hard enough to find your way around Chinatown’…And, to answer Your question: 'TRUTH and The Meaning of LIFE', my son, is a Blue Bird in a tree...hopping from limb to limb...singing joyfully...'

Beside himself, Ambrose almost screamed at the ancient Belgian Holy Man saying:' You mean that I gave up BILLIONS of DOLLARS...an AFFLUENT... LUXURIOUS way of life...a respected member of my upper-class community and Country Club... Chairman of my own reputable Bank...Huge investments yielding fortunes like clock-work...FIVE Luxury Automobiles and a Limousine in my Palacial Estate's garage...servants... three wonderful children...a gorgeous wife who froze all my assets and disowned me because of this Spiritual Journey...I made Many Other sacrifices in search of THE ANSWER to my QUESTION... I was mugged... attacked... robbed... lived like an abandoned animal... starving... eating garbage... crawled on my belly to get here...fell into a crevice... broke my ankle... and, AFTER ALL THAT...ALL YOU CAN TELL ME is ' TRUTH and the Meaning of LIFE is a blue bird in a tree, hopping from limb to limb to limb, singing joyfully..'??...
...to which the Grand Lama responds: '...You mean...it.. ISN'T?'...

So, Why don’t I follow the Experts’ recommendations?

Once more, I want to emphasize that, while I personally have never followed ‘logical sounding advice’ such as some, or most, of the Experts’, I acknowledge that some of it may be right ‘on target’ some of the time!...That is called “The Law Of Averages” :o)

The reason why I never bothered listening to these types of “Do’s and ‘Don’t’s” is that I was fortunate to have studied, learned, developed and practiced a potent and accurate technique …one that has never failed me.. has kept my blood in good balance, as it has my metabolism and all my vital signs…

Without Any Conscious strain or effort…Automatically…quietly…by simply listening to...following and ‘obeying my Inner Voice’...my ‘gut feeling instincts’… and firmly Believing and Trusting in the Perfect instructions from my All-Knowing Higher Self...which Has All the ‘Correct...True...Safe... Accurate data Including ALL the foods and drinks that are Truly ‘Good’ for My body...my Mind...my Health...for ME!’

…and I don’t ever need to Consciously concern myself with burdensome diets and all that comes with them... agonize as to ‘which Is Correct and which is not’…I learned how to instinctively get ALL that wisdom...it’s free...saves me the trouble of neurotically reading labels... worry about ‘contents’... study articles... books written subjectively by ‘Experts’ who, to me, have grown to be increasingly questionable.

Reminds me of so many puny, pallid, sickly-looking individuals who seems to abound in our ‘Health Foods’ stores..who advise and ’push’..miraculous.. snake-oil type ‘cures’..lotions.. potions and costly concoctions containing Heaven-knows-which-witch-doctor-hand-picked-herbs-weeds and other exotic goodies…

…probably as unknown and mysterious to the sales person as it is to us...but they, nevertheless, tout and praise the stuff to justify the Big price tags…More ‘experts’ who vent their spleens and bolster their egos at our expense…don’t mind using us as their lab. rats and test tubes…

And, as recent history has proven… oftentimes some of these ‘herbal’ or ‘natural’ potions were toxic to our Health and Lives. Even Bigger prices to pay than are on the price tags…

While the above sounds like an indictment of herbal and health foods, it is not… merely an expose of another popular fad… Many herbal remedies are indeed helpful in relieving aches, pains, ailments…In fact, I myself use herbs, not only in my kitchen, but also in “tisanes” to help relieve certain conditions non-chemically.

The problem rests with those untested…with little or no “verifiable track record”…and too many unfounded, trumped-up, exaggerated, sensationalistic claims and rumors. The ones that send naïve masses of desperate individuals frantically seeking and being sold panaceas developed in the minds of greedy, unscrupulous profiteers whose main, or only, interest is in the "katchings" of the cash registers.

Interestingly enough, SOME of the advice, techniques and other formulae offered in the articles I researched and reprinted for you MAY be, or ARE, in fact, compatible with the Wisdom I also get from my Subconscious Guides (from the Ether)…Even so, I don’t NEED to agonize over the quantitative articles and ‘latest’ (oftentimes denials or retractions by the "Experts", constantly read or heard in the Media )… Believe me, this brings Far More Relief than Alka Seltzer! :o)

It can always be relied upon to let you know All that you need. Better still: you will find yourself wanting…desiring... savoring...thoroughly enjoying to eat and drink from the abundant goodness of the Earth. Still, much of it may not be that which you presently crave and eat...you know: those foods and drinks that have been contributing to your excess weight, fat and inches…

And so: many of the recipes and formulae for ‘losing’ weight which I am sharing with you throughout this Blog may be or are good, sound, correct advice…Just Remember that none are ‘necessary’ for you or anyone else to concern yourselves with…

A finishing touch to “Hunger Pangs and Cravings”

After months and months of agonizing over privation diets, calorie-counting, weighing minute portions and Lilliputian size ‘meals’…

...In a Restaurant, did you ever sneak furtive looks at ‘forbidden’ foods you longingly spy on some lucky so-n-so’s plate, sitting at the next table?...It’s one of your favorite dishes and you could just kill for a taste of it…Sounds familiar?...

How many times have you walked around famished and gone to bed feeling so hungry? ... Aren’t such episodes sheer torture?...

…Have you ever struggled with your will power… anxiously trying to find some semblance of that comforting, full, or even a tolerable feeling of barely being satisfied...But then, you get plagued by the repeat, constant visits of those nagging cravings and the pinch of sharp hunger pangs?

These are major forces which lead to binge eating and gorging yourself whenever you become emotional and ‘just can’t take it anymore’…give up…throw your arms up and jump off that wagon…just like any other substance abuser would do under like circumstances.

To boot, especially if you have also regimented yourself by suffering the aches and pains of strenuous, backbreaking exercises... added angers set in. After which, you may find yourself regaining all the pounds, and more, of fat, fluids and flab you sacrificed and paid so much, in so many ways, to drop…

I’m sure that you heard this before as well: ‘Diets DON’T Work!’ (and, if/when they DO, at first, they simply DON’T LAST…sadly, they remind me of unstable relationships and too many marriages) …but they keep the desperate coming back for more…’trying’ one Diet Plan or pill or patch, etc. after another…and only their wallet gets thinner!...

Joe E. Lewis said it best: ‘ I went on a diet, swore off drinking and heavy eating and, in fourteen days I had lost two weeks!’…:o) …

And, the worst part of this ‘yo-yo’, ’revolving door’, expensive exercise in futility is that you don’t even earn a purple heart or medal of honor or mere public recognition and praise for having been a victim, a martyr, a hero, a veteran of this hopeless version of the famous “Battle of the Bulge!” (another traumatic historical event from my native Belgium)…

...So, a great many ‘Xtra-Xtra Large’ size wearers start shopping around for a ‘quick fix’… (anything to get all those pesky naggers and wise guys off my big back!). Then you hear about some ‘magic’ sounding way to get thin quick...simply by listening to some affordable tape (it really works, 'they' say...)…

Well...it sounds good (pardon the pun)…about which Woody Allen said : ‘Hanging is too good for a man who makes puns; he should be drawn and quoted’…:o) …

NOT to ‘knock the competition’ by any means…but as genuinely conscientious, ethical and caring Professionals, we felt obligated to caution the possibly uninformed, and a bit naïve amongst you to avoid being emotionally driven…motivated by despair…to 'take a high dive into that pool on sheer adrenalin…then, on the way down, notice in horror that there is very little or no water at the bottom !’..(Jacques Girard).

Fortunately for you, if the worst thing that happens to you in such a case is money down the drain, you would be getting off cheap if you come out in relative good health…

Think about it: Just about all of us are good at delaying in the first place. You know how you keep putting off cleaning the house, giving your boss that proposal or even throwing out the garbage? More to the point, many of us are pretty darn good at procrastinating, right? I know I am. While I’m certainly not proud of this dubious skill, delaying, I've found, is a fun, clever way to give procrastination a positive spin!

I hit upon this incredible strategy back in 1998 when I was told to kick sweets and simple carbs on doctor's orders. To this day, I'm struck by how easy, effortless and darn effective it is to just delay!

Everyone of any age -- unless you’re maybe a tot -- can cultivate this tactic. All you have to do is promise yourself to hold off for a brief period of time. Then, you can delay over and over again, even for hours. Just think: The next morning you'll be relieved and proud of yourself

1. Delaying (first 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, etc.) before eating that brownie, cookie or candy bar gives you a golden opportunity to break away from your impulses to eat sweets so that you can easily detach from them.
2. Delaying for 10 minutes, then 15 minutes, etc., allows your cravings to readily subside while you get involved with other things.
3. Delaying lets you take positive, health-promoting action by simple inaction. Yes, doing absolutely nothing can be pivotal when kicking or cutting back on sweets and quickie carbs.
4. Delaying turns procrastinating into an effective art form and proactive gesture.
5. Delaying allows you to zero in on what foods -- if any -- you’re really craving. Does your body really need cookies, cake, and pretzels? I highly doubt it!! Or would your amazing body rather have water, fresh vegetables and fruits, high-quality protein or healthy fats?
6. Delaying gives you a chance to get in touch with your true feelings. What the heck is really going on that makes these quickie carbs so tantalizing to you?
7. Delaying permits you to take pride in yourself that you put off a short-lived, self-defeating immediate gratification in favor of a long-term positive outcome. (Isn't it far preferable to lose weight, have more energy and concentrate better than giving in during one moment of weakness and then suffering the consequences?)

In short, simple delaying is truly one of the most effective tools a successful Sugar Kicker can use.

Pro-Active Action To Cut Your Cravings

I encourage you to become a delaying artist now. Of course, as you know, "practice makes perfect."
• Next time you have a hankering for something sweet (that's processed), begin by delaying. Look at your watch or a clock and now wait for 5 minutes before putting any refined sweets in your mouth—you can easily do that!
• Now, step outside your obsessive sugary thoughts and wait 10 minutes. It can help if you do something else in the meantime.
• Then hold off another 20 minutes. Be creative with your delaying time. Some people find doing the dishes or putting clothes away is a way to pull the plug on your food thoughts.
• Then really challenge yourself! Wait an hour, then 2 hours, or maybe even the whole evening. You can do it!
• Finally, write about your experience in a journal or notebook.
By delaying, you could learn a lot about yourself and the power of a focused mind.

10 Ways To Control Your Hunger Pangs & Cravings

A recent survey questioned participants whether or not they have food vices. The response was a unanimous YES! And 38 percent confessed to breaking their diets DAILY to consume them, while another 33 percent break their diets WEEKLY to indulge in them.

So let’s put some focus on those vices and help you BUST them out of your life and keep you progressing toward your weight goals.

First things first: Eat breakfast! It is said to be THE most important meal of the day, it awakens your metabolism and ignites your fat-burning furnace (*)

Plan lunch and dinner and healthy snacks for throughout the day. Do not skip meals or planned snacks. Skipping on recharging your body with healthy fuel will certainly send you searching for your vice foods and knock you off track!

There are so many "good-for-you" snacks on the market today, there is really no reason you should have a cupboard full of Twinkies and Dorritos. Always read the back of the packages of foods -- look at the fat, carb and calorie content. NOTHING is as good of a snack as a fresh, raw, organically grown fresh fruit or vegetable!

Here's a list of healthy snacks that won’t ruin your diet:
• Frozen grapes
• Animal crackers
• Any type of low fat crackers - (there are many different varieties - read the back of the packages to make sure that they are low in fat. Again, be wary of the salt content.)
• Fat Free Fig Newtons
• AIR popped or LITE microwave popcorn without butter
• A cup of sliced strawberries with fat free Koolwhip
• Frozen banana
• A stick of sugar-free chewing gum
• Mini carrots
• A cup of raw veggies with non-fat salad dressing for dip.

More ideas
* Brush your teeth and put whitening strips on!
* DRINK WATER! Water is nature’s BEST appetite suppressant. Lean on it in times of hunger pangs!
* Keep your fingers busy so finger food isn’t an option! I think everyone has a great novel in their heart, so start writing. You never know -- you could end up on Oprah’s couch crying with her about your new book club book pick

(*) Interestingly enough, I was credited for coining this metaphor over thirty-five years ago, as part of my S.L.I.M. For Life Program…It is an excellent one..so I shall only quote another popular one to illustrate why this sort of plagiarism of “cutesy word coinage” does not bother me: ‘Imitation is the highest form of flattery’.. :o)

(*) P.S.: And about “Breakfast Is The Most Important Meal Of The Day”…if you haven’t yet gathered that I personally do not adhere to this particular belief and custom, passed on from generation to generation, let me reconfirm that I haven’t eaten breakfast since age 18.

Not for revellious reasons...simply in keeping with a Promise I had made to myself that, after leaving my family to go to America, I would ONLY eat when I am hungry, drink when I am thirsty, sleep when I am tired...never when the clock says it is time to...

When you read all my posts, you will learn why, and the fact that breaking this, and other dietary die-hard “Must Dos” have never done me ANY harm. My Physicians continue to be amazed, as they too, were brainwashed by this ongoing tradition, thus swear by it and help perpetuate it.

“Logically” speaking, the modern theory behind the metabolic values of religiously eating breakfast may make sense. However, I almost never get hungry before dark (and will eat at other times, if and when I do). “My” Health and Wellness Powers come from “A Higher Source” (as repeatedly explained and demonstrated throughout my Trainings).

I am referring to that awesome Force comparable to the capabilities of “God” in so many wonderful ways: Your and my Sub-conscious Brain cells, networks of nerves, lobes and other miraculous Labyrinths over which WE have TOTAL Control, and are at our disposal 100%, around the clock.

“As WE THINK and Fervently BELIEVE, So We ARE!”. Remember also that we attract that which we FEAR and WORRY ABOUT the Most, on a consistent basis! Conversely, we also have the ability to attract Good, Wholesome, Beneficial events and people! :o)

MY rationale for having “gotten away with” skipping breakfast (and most lunches) since my late teens is that I did not believe that “listening to and following the directions of my Inner Voice, my Higher Self” would ever mislead or harm me in any way!... And IT HASN’T!

To Wit: Yesterday, after the six month follow-up medical exam by one of my Physicians (**), she literally beamed with pleasure at my excellent overall condition. She especially loved my mental attitude and how I positively handle what too many others unfortunately turn into major health problems.

(**) She is the head of the outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy Department of a large Hospital: a humble, “up” genius of a Lady who cared for me when I was first admitted for a broken right shoulder, and through my convalescing period.

Controlling Your Hunger Pangs & Cravings - Part VI

Welcome back! Hope you enjoyed a fine weekend and are all charged up about creating and experiencing a Great Week for yourself and those in your personal Universe.

Back to overcoming your "neurotic" hunger pamgs and "fool's gold" cravings, a very important brain function rarely discussed is that mood/emotions/sleep/ appetite-affecting chemical substance called Serotonin.

The female brain actually contains and produces far more of it than the male’s, resulting in ‘her’ being more emotional, sentimental, even temperamental than her male counterpart.

And so, you gals find it far easier to talk about and express your feelings than we guys, for instance. By contrast, we appear to find it difficult to pay sustained attention or show genuine interest and listen to you for very long periods at a time…especially when, to us, you seem to go on ‘indefinite’ tirades of unrelated topics…

This syndrome becomes even more pronounced when your sympathetic nervous system renders you unpredictable, thus confusing, even irritating to us… causing us to often "ignore" you...the safest tactic, incidentally, compared to treating you like a pesky child who simply ‘won’t let go’...which further contributes to occasional emotional imbalances, outbursts, neurotic ramblings and the like...triggered by???

It would help ease such tense moments if you fellows would make an effort to give your mate or lady friend more eye contact whenever she is ‘off and running’... scolding...trying to change you (Hah! :o))...nagging...dredging up from what you believed was the grave of ‘dead and buried'...forgiven and forgotten [at least, by you] events of ancient history...even screaming (especially when her hormones seem to turn her into a ‘Category Five Hurricane’ at certain times of the month, A.K.A. [also known as] Powerful Major Storm...which is probably why such natural occurrences that lash out with devastating force are given female names )...:o)

The recommended eye contact – especially when made with inner Love..Warmth and heartfelt, patient supportiveness - at least reassure the unleashed lady that you are paying attention to her, if not truly concerned or interested in what she says…

These serotonin and sympathetic nervous system differences are all part of the ongoing (for millennia) ‘Mars/Venus tug-of-war of the sexes’...and an intrinsic part of ‘life’ together and living it as best as we can in relative peace and harmony…

HUNGER PANGS AND CARVINGS - Part V

By the way, did you ever see that cartoon of a stork that had a frog in its beak…about to be swallowed down?
One of the frog’s rear legs (a delicacy where I come from) was hanging low while both its front ones squeezed the stork’s throat as the latter looked justifiably surprsied…The caption read: ‘NEVER GIVE UP!!’…:o)

The act of repeating an action over and over again creates a psychological pattern..and soon a new habit.. This technique can be used to form new habits as well as get rid of existing ones you no longer want in your lifestyle…

A little later down the line, I will share with you a simple daily mental exercise in the form of a chart which will be fully explained to you and further ease forming new habits and/or eliminate old ‘bad’ ones…

Meanwhile: REMEMBER that it took many repetitions on your part (daily..and probably even more frequently than that) of catering and giving in to every little hunger pang and craving to form your ‘instant gratification’ and automatic reaction-habit.

It made you a slave to food and drinks that you know make you fat..yet, all the logic and intelligence you possess..yes! all your ‘will power’ turns to mush in the face of your habit..or may we call it your addiction perchance?..

For, if it is the latter: you ought to realize that it would be tantamount to handing over your personal freedom.. independence..right and duty to be and remain in control of your own life..of your future and destiny.. to an ‘evil power’ of sorts... one that is only out to possess you..your emotions..your happiness..peace of mind..pride.. self-respect and total beingness as a free individual…

Once again, let me ask you this:…Better still, ask your Self:
* WHO is in charge?..
* WHO is in control of your life?..
* WHO has the right to dictate..insist..impose..badger..nag..intimidate..force..’push around’..pressure..threaten..derail You anyway?

Is it your stomach?...your cravings?...your hunger pangs?...

Do you mean to tell me that your stomach OWNS.. DICTATES..and CONTROLS YOU?..

..Or do YOU OWN your stomach?...Just as YOU OWN, CONTROL, DICTATE to ALL OTHER parts of your body...Mostly: your MIND, THOUGHTS, DESIRES and ALL ELSE that matters and is most important to YOU?

For those of you esteemed readers who may not be clear about the exact process..about how the brain functions and does all that it does..and what well established scientific evidence and clinical facts give us the right to state, in no uncertain terms, that WE and WE ALONE have the ABSOLUTE.. .EXCLUSIVE..TOTAL CONTROL and are in COMPLETE CHARGE of our own Powerful.. All-Capable BRAIN and MIND…WE…YOU and I !!!

To fully illustrate this vital attribute while keeping it simple and interesting for everyone, I’ll invite you, next, to take a look at... examine.. review and compare the Conscious, Left portion of your BRAIN to its Sub-conscious Right hemisphere in terms of the pluses and minuses of each…

..Just as it behooves you to learn and familiarize yourself as much as you can with the gadgetry of a new automobile before taking it out for a test drive...it is even more imperative that you be fully aware of every aspect of the momentous machinery lodged between your ears, which could be paralleled to the engine... transmission... electric system...brakes...gas and oil tanks... radiator... instrument panel and all other crucial components necessary to make the whole run smoothly…

Controlling Your Hunger Pangs & Cravings- Part IV

The Myryam W. story and testimonial letter

A classical example comes to mind…This is the true story of a lady who, a few years ago, called my office as I was getting ready to load my bags into the car, on my way to flying out of town where I was leading a Seminar Series.

Myriam W. had been referred to me by my partner, a M.F.C.C. and fellow-Clinical Hypnotherapist..who told her that I would be ‘the best man’ for her particular case.

She had unexpectedly become widowed after a happy marriage of over thirty years and was experiencing numerous anxiety and depression problems...she had trouble sleeping at night...would get up and start baking cakes and cookies, which she ‘intended’ to present to her daughter and grandchildren. However, they ended up in her own tummy...so much so that, after maintaining the ‘girlish figure’ she had proudly kept since her College days, she gained over forty pounds

Whenever she would wake up at night...as soon as she would realize her situation...tears rolling down her cheeks...sobbing...desperate... lonely... scared...she would head for the kitchen...

The refrigerator, usually well stocked with her pastries, including her favorite lemon meringue pie, from which she would cut and eat a large piece...and, since hers truly was the most delicious anywhere, she would cut another piece...make some hot chocolate and alleviate her frustration for a while longer...until she decided that she might as well have the large remaining slice join its ‘siblings’...then she'd proceed to bake another pie…

Because I was under pressure to leave, and was scheduled to be out of town for a while, I explained that I would not be able to take her on as a new patient. I asked Myriam if she had ever practiced self-hypnosis, and was pleased to hear her ‘yes!’ answer…

The first technique I suggested she use was the one I shared with you: Visualize... Imagine... Make Believe...Create... Invent any situation that will force you to WAIT for 15-20 minutes without ‘giving in’, etc.…

Since we had a specific clue as to ‘what’ had caused her weight gain, I went a step further: I recommended that, any time she would wake up, startled, ‘all shook up’...instead of heading for the kitchen , she was to close her eyes and powerfully visualize herself going to the refrigerator...find it empty...mentally throw on some clothes...imagine going to her car and driving to a nearby 24-hour ’31 Flavors’ Ice Cream store... (Don't some of you just wish there were one?) :o)

Once there, she was to order a scoop of every flavor in the place...have them served in a Huge bowl...cover them with whipped cream...and every which topping they had on hand…ask for a large ladle and start ‘digging in’ with all the gusto she could muster…I asked that she truly savor each mouthful to the fullest...and feel free to express her delight with loud ‘Mmmmm!’ and ‘Wow!’ and ‘Oh, my Gosh!’ and ‘..Yummy, yummy, yummy!’ sounds of Joy and Delight…

…then, keep on 'shoveling in' this ice cream feast until she would feel totally satisfied...even if that meant placing another order for more…and, when she would feel that she could not take another ladleful...to wipe off her mouth, drive her smiling face back home...fall into bed... and sleep like a baby log (or hog?) :o)


A few months later, as I was conducting a Seminar at U.S.C.’s Davidson Conference Center in Los Angeles, I could not help noticing the beaming face of an attractive lady in the front row. During the first break, she approached me and introduced herself to me: it was Myriam , who had sent me a ‘Thank You’ note the week before…It said:

‘Dear Dr. Girard,

You were kind enough to make a telephone attempt to help me control my appetite for sweets. I can’t tell you how successful it has been. A cookie tastes like straw. Home-made preserves tasted first salty and then bitter, as did a piece of strawberry shortcake last evening. I am delighted and deeply grateful…

(S) Myriam'

At U.S.C., Myriam enthusiastically said that she has already shed more than thirty of the forty pounds she had previously put on...and expected to be back at her normal weight level, which he had kept for more than a quarter of a century, by the end of that month...(and advised me later that she easily made it!) :o)

More importantly, as the excess pounds melted away and the weight came down, her spirits and moods went up...her mental attitude became optimistic...her eyes sparkled
as she smiled genuinely and warmly once more...Life was liveable again!


In your own case, since you know ‘what’ is your alimentary nemesis…use the same exact technique that worked so well for Myriam with ice cream…and shed...shed... shed... those pounds of excess fat, fluids and flab… And, guess what?...NO ‘will power’ needed! :o)

Controlling Your Hunger Pangs & Cravings - Part III

2- PLAY A WAITING GAME

That’s right!...just imagine...’forcefully’ make belief …so forcefully that you actually Do Believe your guided imagery is indeed happening and that you are an intimate part of it…living it…’in it’…Always ‘feel it’ emotionally… FEEL at least as much and intensely as if you were thoroughly involved in your visualization...and that it is really taking place...Now!…

DON’T hold back!...DON’T permit your Conscious brain to rationalize...analyze... criticise...caution...discourage you...’tell you’ how stupid and illogical it is for you to fantasize and ‘make believe’ like a child does about Santa Claus…

Remember that a Great Spiritual Leader once said ‘..Be Ye Like Children..’ for, scientifically speaking: children are mainly in ‘Alpha’, the imaginative..."silly"...creative...daring..."impossible"...illogical... ’unrealistic’...area of the Subconscious Mind to which Nothing is Impossible…And Has the Power to Make It So with sustained practice and sincere determination!...

As I was suggesting, before I interrupted myself, IMAGINE that you are stuck at a bus station or at the airport terminal…waiting for the arrival of someone close and dear to you...and who you have not seen for quite a while... perhaps a veteran returning from the Iraqi battle fields…

The bus or plane is running late…and you need to wait for about 15-20 minutes longer…Meanwhile, concentrate on...visualize... mentally experience (‘feel’) how wonderful and exciting the upcoming reunion will be…feel the warmth of hugging ... holding... squeezing... kissing... seeing again the returning hero…asking him or her all the questions you are itching to pose...to learn about all the things you have been wondering about...to satisfy your curiosity…(and so on…)…

Make up any such situation and ‘live’ it with all the Imagination and Belief you can muster…Make it real !... See it !... Feel it !... Be there with all the creativity in you!

And, picture...picture...picture…visualize...visualize...visualize fantasize... fantasize...fantasize...AND...Always BECOME PASSIONATELY INVOLVED (‘feel it’)!…

You will find that, any time you ‘play this game’...following the simple rule of experiencing ‘being there’ for 15-20 minutes... you will no longer feel hungry or crave what you did before you began!

Most importantly: ANY...EVERY TIME you experience hunger pangs or cravings...Invent a situation that will keep your thoughts distracted and busy for 15-20 minutes!...THIS REALLY WORKS!

Once you SEE that , as in other situations, ‘Success Breeds Success’...and you begin to feel more and more pleased and justifiably proud of yourself...especially as you notice how your tummy is starting to shrink...and flatten…ever so little...yet: it is ‘going down’!...and that’s all that matters!...and:

3- REPEAT..REPEAT..REPEAT…

…this process any/ every time ‘the little goblins from the evil Black Forest’ that love to taunt and tempt you to ‘pig out’… PLAY the GAME!... You will soon understand how important this is to you!...for you will be retraining your brain and form ‘good’ New Habits...

Part II: Back to controlling your hunger pangs and cravings...

Our immediate concern, however, is learning "How NOT to ‘give in to’ your hunger pangs and cravings... to harness these gwawing, nagging (mainly ‘False Alarm’) signals and eventually Overcome them Completely".

The ‘will power’ said by the experts (O.K… Stop giggling!) to be 'the only' requirement will be an automatic, effortless attribute that shall not cause you any mental strain or breakdown, once you learn and practice a few simple autogenic (self-generated, self-produced, self-controlled) mental exercises that are relaxing, beneficial and fun!

Best of all, they can be used to help you resolve any number of questions, doubts, problems, fears, worries and other conditions known to plague most people, including many which involve health and wellness issues, far beyond, yet including, those at hand...

And so, to help you get under way with your hunger pangs and cravings blockage…

1- CREATE A DISTRACTION

In military terms, this is appropriately known as a ‘diversionary tactic’...
The way this works in psychological terms, shortcuts and applications is this:

Any time you wish or feel the need to deflect or bring to an end , say, a temper tantrum, the loud crying…nerve-wracking screaming…ear-piercing screeching…shrill shrieking of an infant…toddler…small child…’to save your sanity’ (and prevent child beatings, in many cases): Simply SHOCK them with ANY distraction (a sound...an arm gesture...hands clapping...(*) etc.)which will divert their attention...interrupt the piercing Police siren-like pandemonium…

Preferably: use something...anything you already know interests, fascinates or distracts them every time…and then...watch what happens!

The flow of tears instantly STOPS!...as if the faucet had magically been shut off...And so do the maddening howlings…the stomping... the evil temper tantrum!...
A new page has been turned… The calm after the storm... :o)

(*) The suggestion above to ‘clap hands’ prompted me to ask you a challenging question often posed to young students by Zen Masters: ‘What is the sound of one hand clapping?’…usually followed by long..agonizing periods of pondering...

If you would like to play this game, please close your eyes now…mark the spot and keep your eyes shut until you believe you have the only answer accepted by the Zen Masters...which is: ‘ The sound of one hand clapping is...the sound of one hand clapping!...’
…And a new page of another kind has been turned… :o)

This gratuitous child rearing consultation may appear to be unrelated to the focus of this entire expose on excess weight and obesity...and, more particularly, ‘How to overcome hunger pangs and cravings’…

The connection should become obvious when you consider the emotional, psychological, mental and physical parallels between the agonizing inner turmoil induced by both these intense experiences : the screaming child and the screaming inner cravings of the gut. (Continued in my next Post)

HUNGER PANGS AND CRAVINGS…- Part I

HOW TO RESIST, FIGHT, SUPPRESS, FOOL, HARNESS AND OVERCOME THEM.

As is the case in any/all neurotic, obsessive, addictive oriented habit, the first step that must be taken is acknowledgement, admission, agreement that there IS a “problem”.

In the area of eating disorders, excess weight and obesity, the toughest truth to swallow is that there are two types of cravings and hunger pangs. The problem that they are extremely difficult to tell apart.

The true, “natural”, physical type of hunger and cravings feel very much like those which originate in the brain’s food, drink and pleasure centers.

The latter are neurotically driven, just as are erratic behavior patterns to which there is no logical, pragmatic, reasonable explanation, thus “make no sense” to the onlookers as well as the performers. Sex, drugs, rock-and-roll and now also food and drink.
